THE FIREBIRDS: ALADDIN’S DREAM
THE FIREBIRDS PLAY CARL NIELSEN
The critically acclaimed trio, The Firebirds, released their second album on the 28th of April: Aladdin’s Dream – The Firebirds play Carl Nielsen. The album is a tribute to the Danish composer Carl Nielsen, and the trio hereby continues their work transforming orchestral-pieces into their own unique sound.
Working with Carl Nielsen’s music unfolded a much more versatile and complex musical universe than the trio had anticipated. As a result the encounter turned out to be more detailed and rich with passages that through The Firebirds’ sound describes their interpretation of Nielsen’s images. As a result the encounter turned out to be more detailed and rich with passages that through The Firebirds’ sound describes their interpretation of Nielsen’s images. The record is also a more collective piece, where all three musicians have contributed to creating the sound and arrangements on the album.
Since their debut 2 years ago the trio has toured over much of Europe, which has had an enormous impact on their sound. It has therefore been extremely important in the process of creating the album, that it encapsulates the wildness, which is a big part of the sound at their live concerts – an experience described this summer by Danish magazine Gaffa:
”Armed with drums, saxophone and keyboards Stefan Pasborg and his compadres zooms in on the work of Stravinsky and Carl Nielsen and gives them an entirely new sound and justification…Can a jazz trio really play classical pieces? For the three gentlemen in The Firebirds no challenge seems great enough.”
The Firebirds consists of the three Danish improvisational musicians Stefan Pasborg, Anders Filipsen and Anders Banke, who in The Firebirds work in a musical universe where the inspirations are many and a.o. include blues, rock, avant-garde jazz and improv. The three musicians have been a part of numerous projects and toured all over the world with groups and musicians such as Ibrahim Electric, New Jungle Orchestra, Travelling Tribes, Tomasz Stanko, Marc Ducret and John Tchicai.
The Firebirds’ debut album was critically acclaimed by both international and Danish press and was selected for the Top-5 list as ’ Best of 2015-tribute-releases’ in the American magazine 'New York City Jazz Record’. The press described the record:
"The Firebirds is captivating, fascinatingly beautiful, and direct music: stories of almost cinematic character; as if it was created for a new epic by David Lynch.” (Gaffa).
"It is an impressive and wonderful bridge, that is built between the classical and rhythmical music.” (Jazznyt DK).
''The three Pasborg-firebirds have in a charming fashion shed new light over some of the strongest euro-classical pieces of music from the past century, without loosing the complexity of the pieces..." (Jazznyt Norway).
THE FIREBIRDS: ALADDIN’S DREAM
THE FIREBIRDS PLAY CARL NIELSEN
Den anmelderroste trio The Firebirds udgav den 28. april deres andet album: Aladdin’s Dream – The Firebirds play Carl Nielsen.
For de tre herrer i The Firebirds synes ingen udfordring for stor.”
(Jazznyt Norge)
